What I Wish I Knew Before Climbing Kilimanjaro

What I Wish I Knew Before Climbing Kilimanjaro
Written by sekotours

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro was an incredible adventure, but there were a few things I wish I’d known before I started. If you’re planning on taking on this challenge, here are some tips that can make your journey a bit easier.

1. It’s Not a Race – Go Slow!

One of the biggest surprises for me was how important it is to go slowly. You might feel strong and want to keep up a fast pace, but on Kilimanjaro, “pole pole” (which means “slowly” in Swahili) is the way to go. The altitude affects everyone differently, and the slower you go, the more time your body has to adjust.

2. Altitude Sickness is Real

I heard about altitude sickness, but I didn’t fully understand how challenging it could be until I felt it myself. Headaches, nausea, and feeling out of breath can hit hard. It’s important to listen to your body, stay hydrated, and give yourself time to rest. Some climbers even take medication to help with altitude sickness. Don’t ignore how you feel; it’s okay to take a break if you need it.

3. Pack Light, But Smart

I thought I’d need a lot of gear, but overpacking can make your journey more difficult. Bring essentials like warm clothing (it gets very cold up there), good trekking boots, and layers. You’ll also want high-energy snacks, a good water bottle, and something to cover your face and neck from the sun and cold. But leave extra weight at home – it’s exhausting to carry unnecessary items.

4. Training Helps a Lot

Kilimanjaro isn’t technical, meaning you don’t need climbing skills, but fitness helps. I wish I’d done more hiking and cardio before I went. Walking long distances, especially on uneven ground, can help your body prepare for the climb.

5. The Summit is Only Part of the Journey

Reaching the summit is amazing, but the journey itself is what makes Kilimanjaro special. The landscapes change as you go higher – from lush forests to rocky trails, to snow-covered paths. Meeting other climbers and local guides along the way is a big part of the experience too. Enjoy every step, not just the view from the top.

6. Trust Your Guides

The guides on Kilimanjaro know the mountain well. They’ll set a safe pace, encourage you, and help you deal with challenges. Listening to them made a huge difference for me, and I appreciated their knowledge and support. They want you to have a safe and unforgettable experience.

7. The Weather Changes Fast

The weather on Kilimanjaro can go from sunny to snowy quickly, so be prepared for all kinds of conditions. Waterproof clothing, gloves, and a warm hat are essential. Even if it’s sunny at the start, you’ll need those layers at higher altitudes.

Final Thoughts

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a rewarding journey that challenges you physically and mentally. With the right preparation and mindset, it can be a life-changing experience. If you’re thinking of taking it on, remember to go “pole pole,” pack smart, and enjoy each part of the adventure. The journey is worth every step!
